Application for Blind Persons Exemption

36 M.R.S. § 654 · Form PTF 315

The Blind Exemption

If you are legally blind, Maine law reduces the assessed value of your property by $4,000 (36 M.R.S. § 654).

What you'll actually receive. The $4,000 is adjusted by your town's certified assessment ratio, the percentage of market value the town assesses at. If your town assesses at 100%, the reduction is the full $4,000; at 90%, it's $3,600. Your assessor calculates this.

Who qualifies. You must be determined to be blind by a licensed physician (M.D.), osteopathic physician (D.O.), or Doctor of Optometry. You'll need to attach their documentation to this application.

Deadline. April 1.
